In 1960, Frits Goldschmeding cofounded Uitzendbureau Amstelveen — renamed Randstad in 1964 — after writing a thesis on temporary work for his master’s degree in economics. CEO for 38 years, he grew the company into a global giant and actively lobbied to improve the image of the staffing industry as well as strengthen the legal position of staffing employees. Randstad is now the largest staffing firm in the world. Goldschmeding retired as CEO in 1999 and joined the supervisory board of Randstad Holding; he retired from the board in 2011. He continues to be the largest shareholder in the company. In 2015, he founded the Goldschmeding Foundation, which supports projects that respond to important societal issues involving people, work and economy.
