Julia Robertson has long been motivated by her belief that there is “a better way to do recruitment”. She became Impellam Group’s chief executive officer in 2013 after joining Tate in 1996, which was later acquired to form part of what is now Impellam Group. Prior to Impellam Group, Robertson was chief executive of the Institute of Employment Consultants (now known as the Recruitment & Employment Confederation), the professional body for the UK recruitment industry. She also founded her own recruitment business in 1986, which was sold to the Group alongside Tate. In 2016, Robertson received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Recruitment Professionals.

Industry veteran Miles Hunt became the first-ever chairman of Cobalt Recruitment in 2019. Miles also chairs several other companies, including Apsco Global, which represents the professional recruitment sector in Germany, Singapore and Australia as well as the UK. In 2013, he launched private equity investment firm Benula Capital, which has nine investments in the staffing sector, HR consulting firms and providers of recruiting technology. Prior to Benula, Hunt founded UK-based international staffing specialist Empresaria Group in 1996 and led its IPO in 2004 before stepping down as chief executive in 2012.

Ann Swain is chief executive officer of the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) and, before that, its predecessor, ATSCo. In 1988, she founded Learning Curve, a specialist recruitment training company that was acquired by the Delphi Group in 1997. With more than 30 years’ experience in the recruitment sector, Swain is an authority in the industry, an international speaker, and a passionate advocate for the U.K. staffing sector. She is also the author of the Professional Recruiter’s Handbook.

APSCo founder and Global CEO Ann Swain has more than 30 years’ recruitment experience, which includes time as managing director of Learning Curve and UK sales director at Computer People before establishing APSCo in 1999. APSCo is an international trade body representing the professional recruitment sector with operations in the UK, Germany, Singapore and Australia. In 2014, Swain joined the Executive Committee of Women in Recruitment. More recently, she was invited to chair the European team in the popular ”Top Recruiter” docuseries. Swain is also co-author of the best-selling Professional Recruiter’s Handbook. Her articles appear regularly in the national and recruitment media, and she is a popular platform speaker at conferences in the UK and across the world.

Neil Carberry

Neil Carberry was appointed chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation in June 2018, having been managing director of the Confederation of British Industry, leading the CBI’s work on the labour market, skills, energy and infrastructure. In 1999, Carberry began his career in recruitment working for executive search firm Fraser Watson before earning a post-graduate degree in Human Resources at the London School of Economics and joining the CBI in 2004. He is a member of the council of the conciliation service ACAS and of the Low Pay Commission, where he helps guide pay policy in the UK.

Kevin Barrow is a partner with law firm Osborne Clarke. Since 1990, he has advised staffing companies on all types of legal work including commercial deals, international joint ventures and M&A. His multicountry team works for more than 100 hirers and suppliers on market-leading UK, EU and international flexible workforce — MSP, RPO and VMS — projects, regulation of digital recruitment and online exchanges, tax planning relating to flexible workforces and worker misclassification and coemployment class actions. Barrow has led a campaign to change the regulatory regime affecting online exchanges, and in the last three years has rolled out staffing/MSP deals in 40 countries.

With 23 years’ technology recruitment experience, David Gettins has led Impellam Group’s Lorien division as managing director for five years. Lorien provides technology, digital and transformation solutions in the UK, Europe and North America. Gettins spearheaded Lorien’s entry into the DACH market and helped facilitate mergers that have helped make Lorien an internationally recognised brand. Under his leadership, Lorien saw post-Covid gross profit grow by 43.5% in 2021. Over the last 12 months, Lorien’s headcount has also increased by 45% through internal investment — a testament to Gettins’ belief that “people make the difference.”

Nigel Heap is managing director of Hays U.K. & Ireland and chairman of Hays Asia Pacific. Heap has been with the company since 1988. In 1997, he was appointed managing director of Hays Australia, plus New Zealand in 1999, Hong Kong and China in 2006, Japan and Singapore in 2007 and Malaysia in 2012. In 2006, Heap was appointed managing director of Asia Pacific and joined the group management board.
