Ann Swain is global CEO of APSCo, an international trade body she founded in 1999 that represents the professional recruitment sector in the UK, Germany, Singapore and Australia. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, APSCo actively advocated for the industry in regard to government policy developments. In order to support recruitment business growth during these difficult times, Swain and the APSCo team launched a number of initiatives during lockdown, including AdvisorLink — a service to connect recruitment firms with some of the sector’s best business growth experts and non-executive directors. A platform speaker at UK and international recruitment conferences, Swain co-authored the Professional Recruiter’s Handbook and chaired the European team in the popular Top Recruiter documentary series.

Gary Elden became CEO of SThree in 2013, after serving as its deputy CEO since June 2012. Before that, Elden was SThree’s chief strategy officer. He has held a number of senior positions, including that of founding managing director of Huxley Associates. Elden joined SThree’s IT recruitment brand, Computer Futures, as a recruitment consultant in 1990 and in 2008 he was appointed to the board. In 2016, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Elden an Officer for the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to diversity in business. The year prior, he won the prestigious Black British Business Person of the Year award.

Richard Herring joined Volt as director of European Staffing Services in 2006. In 2010, he became managing director at Volt Europe Ltd., a division of Volt Information Sciences Inc.; he also serves as its senior VP for EMEA and Asia operations, leading Volt’s staffing and MSP operations in Europe and Southeast Asia. His career in the recruitment industry began in 1988 at Reed Technology, where he ultimately led the IT recruitment business for more than five years. He then moved to The Skills Market, where he was operations director. He has served as an executive board member, Representative Committee chair, and chairman for the Association of Professional Staffing Companies, based in the UK.

Denis Waxman retired in 2007 as CEO of UK-based Hays plc. He joined the staffing industry from a career in accounting with the 1968 launch of his own staffing firm, Career Care Group. The company served as Hays’ door into the staffing industry when the latter acquired it in 1986; Hays was founded in 1867 as an operator of wharves and warehouses on the River Thames. Waxman stayed on as managing director of the recruitment business, and moved up the ranks to become CEO in 2004. Hays plc is the sixth-largest staffing firm in the world.

Phillip Ullmann has led the Cordant Group for 22 years in various leadership roles including as CEO and most recently as executive chairman; he now refers to himself as the group’s “chief energiser”. The group ranks in the top 10 of Staffing Industry Analysts’ Largest Staffing Firms in the UK. In 2017, the group announced its new status as a “Social Enterprise” and said it will reinvest most its profits in due course into social programmes across education, employment and healthcare. The group has revenue of £840 million and employs 125,000 workers annually in schools, hospitals, care homes, security and specialist roles such as engineering. Ullmann graduated from the University of Cambridge with an M.A. in engineering.
